Frederick Douglass is commonly known merely as the black man who escaped slavery. This perspective overlooks his brilliance as a thinker, his powerful advocacy for freedom and his influence as a statesman. This is why, in nearly every editorial I've written for 1819 News, I included a relevant quote – or multiple quotes – from Douglass. My goal is to establish Douglass as a major thought leader on liberty.

More Than Just a Former Slave

Douglass’ sharp intellect was so profound that five Republican presidents sought his guidance.

When William Lloyd Garrison hired Douglass as a speaker for the abolitionist movement, he wanted Douglass to share his personal story – how he was beaten, mistreated and escaped to freedom. Each time Douglass spoke, he vividly brought the brutal reality of slavery to life for his audience.

Douglass was more than just a man who endured captivity. He didn’t just want to share his slave story; he wanted to talk about the nature of oppression, the significance of liberty, and the philosophy that all men are created equal.

As Douglass shared his insights, Garrison and the other speakers grew intellectually arrogant. They saw Douglass as a storyteller, not a philosopher, telling him to leave the thinking to them.

Douglass realized that true freedom wasn’t just about escaping slavery – it also meant thinking for himself. Over time, Douglass distanced himself from Garrison and his belief that the Constitution was a pro-slavery document.

A Message of Liberty That Cuts Through Political Noise

The Founders gave us two magnificent documents – the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Because some of them were slave owners, the left exploits this fact to shame them. In contrast, Douglass was a slave, yet his message of liberty dismantles the left's deceptive rhetoric and exposes their false narratives. When people learn about Douglass' strong respect for the Founders, the Constitution, and his views on free speech, immigration, economic prosperity, and religious freedom – just to mention a few of his life-empowering values – they start to understand the importance of liberty.

This is why Douglass is America’s greatest voice for liberty. His perspective as a former slave gives his words unique power.

The One-Man Marxists Cannot Defeat

The left thrives on division, identity politics, and rewriting history to fit their narrative. They manipulate historical events, distort key figures, and cherry-pick facts to push an agenda that fosters dependency, victimhood and government control. Douglass is the one figure they cannot erase, manipulate, or use to advance their ideology.

The left can't undermine Douglass' legacy with propaganda because his life story shatters their narrative. Born into slavery, he endured unimaginable hardship and overcame every obstacle in his path. He didn’t escape oppression through government handouts or social programs but through his God-given talent, unwavering faith, education and relentless hard work.

The left cannot successfully discredit the Constitution when challenged by a man who endured 20 years of slavery. That’s why I focus so much on Douglass. His liberty message powerfully challenges Marxist ideology.

Moreover, Douglass’ legacy inspires hope. The hope that anyone can rise to greatness, no matter their starting point in life. That’s because no American today can claim greater victimhood than Douglass. His life is proof that success is not determined by race but by resilience.

Douglass’ journey from bondage to immense prosperity proves the American Dream is real.

A Challenge to Marxist Ideology

The left can’t twist Douglass’ words because he spoke powerfully and explicitly against the very principles they attack:

  • Right to Keep and Bear Arms: The left pushes for gun control that disarms law-abiding citizens. Having lived in a time when black Americans needed to defend themselves from racial violence, Douglass supported the right to bear arms for self-defense.
  • Immigration: The left promotes open borders and policies that undermine the rule of law. Douglass valued law and order, believing that immigration should be a process that strengthened America rather than weakened its foundation.
  • Personal Responsibility: The left pushes policies that create government dependency and stifle ambition. Douglass rejected victimhood and emphasized that individuals must take charge of their own destinies.
  • Limited Power of Government: The left seeks to expand government control over every aspect of life. Douglass knew that unchecked government power leads to oppression. He believed that the government should serve the people, not control them.
  • Respect for Life: The left promotes abortion policies that devalue life in its most vulnerable stages. Douglass recognized that all human beings are created with inherent dignity and worth.
  • Religious Liberty: The left seeks to restrict religious expression, forcing people of faith to follow laws that go against their beliefs. Douglass believed that faith should be freely practiced without government interference.
  • Respect for the U.S. Constitution: The left insists it’s a racist document. Douglass recognized the Constitution as a glorious liberty document” that, when applied fairly, protected the rights of all Americans.
  • Free Speech: The left seeks to silence dissenting voices. Douglass said, "To suppress free speech is a double wrong. It violates the rights of the hearer as well as those of the speaker.”
  • Equal Opportunity: The left pushes Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policies that categorize people by race. Douglass rejected race-based distinctions.
  • Parental School Choice: The left fights to keep children trapped in failing schools. Douglass believed that parents – not the government – should decide how their children are educated.

As long as there are those who try to rewrite history, silence the truth, and undermine the Constitution, Douglass’ liberty message must be shared. It is the antidote to the poison of Marxism, the counter to the victimhood narrative and the roadmap to true empowerment.

If we want to protect our freedoms and defend the Constitution, we must embrace and amplify Douglass’ liberty message – the one man the left cannot defeat.
