The Mobile City Council has approved a $300 million project to build a new arena to replace the Mobile Civic Center.

"Today was an incredible day for the City of Mobile," said Mayor Sandy Stimpson on Tuesday.

The council approved an ordinance approving a $250 million bond issue for the project and a resolution authorizing a contract with B.L. Harbert International, LLC, to construct the arena for $237.4 million.

Stimpson said the bond issue is a critical part of ensuring the City's plan to finance construction.

"I want to take this opportunity to thank the council for their continued support of this project," Stimpson said. "It's one of the largest projects the city has ever undertaken, and that's one of the reasons the plans for the civic center have been studied and discussed for nearly two decades."

"With an incredible team behind us and the support of the council, we've put plans into action and will soon start construction on an incredible entertainment facility that will give generations of Mobilians a place to come together and celebrate," he said.

Stimpson added that the project remains on time and within budget.

Construction on the new, state-of-the-art entertainment arena is set to begin in March. The arena will hold over 10,000 people and have a lifespan of 50 years.

Harbert also built hangars at Airbus and is currently working at the University of South Alabama Medical School.
