
Mac Gipson, administrator of the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, is retiring at the end of the year after 12 years in the role, according to an announcement by Gov. Kay Ivey Friday.

For years, lawmakers in Montgomery have questioned the role of Alabama's Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) board in ways ranging from its participation in the wholesale and retail marketplaces to how it enforces existing laws and regulations pertaining to the sale of liquor.

Members of the Contract Review Committee reviewed a $450,000 communications services contract between the Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board and Direct Communications Thursday for “development of anti-underage drinking materials and online/virtual presentations.”

State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) has been fighting to get the state out of retail alcohol sales, but he said he'd faced stiff opposition from the landlords who lease their properties to the ABC board.

The ABC Board leases more space than any other state agency, according to the Examiners of Public Accounts.
