The increase, which expires after two years, is part of a deal recently announced by outgoing Mayor Dexter McLendon to bring in a new Chick-fil-A restaurant, something that has been in the negotiation phase for years.

The spending habits of City of Helena officials have been scrutinized in the months following an audit report that revealed the city overspent its budget by $11,172,707 and ended the year with a budget deficit. Now, this week, residents learned during a council work session that a new tax increase is on the table.

The Alabama Legislature almost did the right thing in 2023 when they removed the tax on overtime workers – almost. 

Let’s not kid ourselves – any fee imposed by the government is a tax.

State Sen. Linda Coleman-Madison (D-Birmingham) has pre-filed a bill ahead of the upcoming legislation to levy an additional $5 license tax and registration fee on motor vehicles in the state.

Taxation does not become fair by being levied equally – nor does uniform taxation actually create a level playing field or foster equality amongst men. Yet, Alabama’s Big 10 mayors are falsely relying on exactly this appeal to equality in their latest push to increase taxes on Alabamians.

Alabama’s “Big 10” cities stand to make a windfall of cash should the proposed online retail tax increase pass the House of Representatives on Tuesday while many of the state’s metro areas remain embroiled in hardship or controversy.

"The reality is the brunt of any new revenue will come from small business owners and low to middle-income Americans who often lack access to a tax lawyer who could help them navigate the audit process,” said Sen. Tommy Tuberville.
