Auburn University officials announced on Monday that the school would shut down its Office of Inclusion and Diversity in August and reassign staff to other departments.

An Auburn University spokesperson told WSFA on Monday the staff members of the Office of Inclusion and Diversity will be placed in new positions. Some will fill existing vacancies, while others will get new roles in existing offices.

"We remain resolute in our commitment to deliver exceptional experiences and to support all students, with particular emphasis on providing access and opportunity," the university said in a release. "We are dedicated to ensuring the First Amendment is celebrated and that all students, faculty and staff are welcomed, valued, respected and engaged."

The office will be officially dissolved by August 15.

The University of Alabama System announced last week it was rebranding its Diversity, Equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices but keeping the same DEI leadership at its Birmingham, Huntsville and Tuscaloosa campuses.

A new law banning taxpayer-funded DEI offices and training goes into effect on October 1. The law prohibits state agencies, schools, and colleges from sponsoring or requiring students and employees to attend or participate in any diversity, equity and inclusion program, training, orientation or coursework.

Governor Kay Ivey signed the bill into law in March.
