Alabama is one of the most gun-friendly, conservative, and red states. Most folks are surprised that there are a number of bills introduced in the 2024 Alabama legislative session to restrict gun owners.
After a gunman opened fire at multiple locations in Lewiston, Maine, killing at least 18 and wounding at least another dozen, lawmakers and politicos have wasted no time using the shooting to call for additional gun legislation.
On Thursday, the Alabama Legislature approved a bill requiring additional reporting from judges to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) “firearms prohibited persons” database for persons involuntarily committed to either inpatient or outpatient treatment.
In 2022, Birmingham experienced one of its most violent years in modern history, totaling at least 144 homicides. Several of the homicides involved firearms, many of which were drive-by-shootings.
In a press conference on Wednesday morning, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin addressed the latest life lost in the city, which has seen near record-breaking levels of violent crime this year.
"Do you think the federal government should ban semiautomatic weapons?” Rep. Jerry Carl is asking constituents in a new poll that he is conducting.
“There are Democrats in the Seventh District who want to defend their families,” said Nichols on her support of gun rights. “In the Seventh District we treasure our freedoms. We cherish our liberties.”
“This unconstitutional mandate won’t make Americans any safer and will instead result in the disarming of thousands of lawful gun owners who simply want to protect their families and exercise their constitutional rights,” said Rep. Barry Moore.
“Barely a month after the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in NYSRPA v. Bruen, gun control advocates in Congress are spearheading an assault upon the freedoms and civil liberties of law-abiding Americans," said NRA-ILA Executive Director Jason Ouimet.
Tuberville said he believes red-flag laws should be left up to each state, and he believes that federal grant money being offered to states to enact these laws should also be available to other states for mental health programs.
"Gun grabbers use so-called 'red flag laws' as a gateway to push their disarming agenda," Katie Britt told the 1819 News following passage of national Red Flag legislation. "In reality, a 'red flag law' is an abridgment of the Second Amendment and can be abused to take away the right to self-defense with no due process.
“I was proud to vote for the Protecting Our Kids Act which advances common sense measures to keep Alabamians safe, from getting illegal guns off the streets to banning high-capacity weapons to raising the age to purchase semi-automatic weapons," Sewell said.
During an interview with Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5's "The Jeff Poor Show" on Friday, U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) chalked Biden's gun control rhetoric up to pre-midterm election politics.
“This critical bill would crack down on illegal gun trafficking, raise the age to purchase semi-automatic weapons, strengthen background checks, and prevent guns from getting into the hands of those who shouldn’t have them," Rep. Terri Sewell said of the Democrats' latest gun control bill.
