High school football teams gear up another week of early season games. Some teams opened last week while others delayed their season opener to this week. Each week, we’ll take a quick look at notable games.

The Tuscaloosa City Council approved a concession application to sell alcohol inside football games at the University of Alabama (UA) Tuesday.

They are linked together from a long ago, memorable December evening at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Now, you can add extended college football journeys concluding at the same spot, which happens to be about 800 miles northeast of Birmingham, to that link.

Chris Stewart, the Voice of Alabama football for at least the 2022 season opener, wants to make one thing clear. “This is filling in for him, this is not replacing him,” Stewart said of longtime Voice of Alabama football Eli Gold. “While I’m sick that there is a need for a fill in, I’m extremely honored that they’ve chosen me to do it.”

When Hugh Fountain was announced as the new head football coach for W.S. Neal High in East Brewton, it carried significance that went beyond sports. It reunited two men who had been friends since kindergarten. Because Fountain and Principal Todd Williamson are both alumni of the W.S. Neal class of ’82.

Official word came Monday that Bryant Vincent will serve as UAB’s interim head football coach during the 2022 season.

The Birmingham Stallions claimed a 31-17 victory Saturday over the New Orleans Breakers to send the team to the inaugural United States Football League Championship Game Sunday. When the Birmingham will play the Philadelphia Stars.
