As I’ve pointed out recently, members of Congress tend to name pieces of legislation the exact opposite of what the bill actually does. The “Respect for Marriage Act” is no different.
Too often one of the side effects of politics is that people expect their elected officials to “bring home the bacon."
I presume the government I live under is swift to evil and even swifter to call such evil necessary. But, why?
Back in the day, before late night shows turned into political lectures devoid of humor, comedy was something people would look forward to before turning in. No matter how bad your workday was, you could count on Johnny Carson to make you laugh.
I’m taking a break in this piece from my usual op-eds about law because we need to discuss something much deeper. As the great Montesquieu observed centuries ago: public policy is based on the people’s values, and the people’s values are based on their religion. Thus, religion ultimately drives what society looks like.

Listen to 1819 News Contributor Stephanie Holden Smith on The Jeff Poor Show as they discuss the AEA professional association and its apparent focus on its members and not on education, as evidenced by abysmal student test scores.

The Ninth Amendment protects rights not even listed in the Constitution. It was the anti-federalist insurance policy that the newly formed federal government misconstrued the language of the document to deny any individual rights.
The people of any community do not have to just settle for disruption and disorder. They don’t. The people in the small mountain village prove that point.
It was a little over a year ago when I first was contacted about 1819 News. It had been over a decade since I was part of a news organization, but journalism — good journalism — has always been my first love.
There’s a national movement to get liberal prosecutors not to prosecute crimes at all. In addition, the federal government has sued Alabama over the conditions of our prisons.
Listen to 1819 News CEO Bryan Dawson on News & Views with Joey Clark as they are joined by Justin Bogie, Senior Director of Fiscal Policy at the Alabama Policy Institute, as they discuss $160 million in unemployment claim overpayments, which are being dismissed as insignificant and should be forgiven, while the same amount in tax cuts this year was touted as meaningful tax relief.
Listen to Alabama Unfiltered's Amie Beth Shaver on News & Views with Joey Clark as they discuss furries and litterboxes in school restrooms, kids and cellphones and Alabama Unfiltered.
According to recent data from the U.S. Department of Labor, Alabama overpaid unemployment compensation benefit recipients by more than $164 million in 2020 and 2021.
I attended Turning Point USA’s Student Action Summit this past weekend in Tampa. It was delightful to see so many young conservative patriots (over 5,000) in attendance - willing to stand up for our God-given freedoms and rights - the values our founders established for our country, which are secured by the U.S. Constitution.
Schools today chase the latest ideology. And because we can't see the damage or we choose to ignore it, the idea seems to be, what's the harm in letting a kid express themselves? Who cares if they dress up as a furry?
Under current Alabama law, judges have limited authority to deny bail to violent offenders unless the suspect is charged with a capital offense or poses a flight risk. That means that dangerous criminals are being released back onto the streets, even when its likely they will commit more violent crimes as soon as they make bail.
Listen to 1819 News Editor-in-Chief Ray Melick on The Jeff Poor Show as they discuss teacher salaries versus disappointing student testing results.
