I’ve often thought that the underlying message of “Lord of the Rings” is that sometimes the Lord takes an ordinary person like Bilbo Baggins, calling him to play a pivotal role in a cosmic struggle between forces of good and evil, the dimensions and consequences of which he was previously unaware. 

I hope that every student and every adult can let Friday night’s truth settle into their bones … you must never give up the good fight, not until the clock reads zero.

The first Christian martyrs (though their names or exact number remain unknown) are a visceral testament to the interplay of God’s justice, mercy and grace.

He is but a man of clay, as I am, his heart etched in the granite of conviction, yet shadowed by the weight of human frailty. His doubts on humanity run deep, like trenches dug on the ramparts and on the battlefield of the soul.

The political violence plaguing our nation is no longer a partisan problem. It’s spiritual warfare, good versus evil.

The death penalty is just war in microcosm. Men like Robinson have declared war on society and the common good, and it is the state’s role to suppress their sin by any means necessary for their own sake as well as for others.

Pay attention to the little stuff today. Things you usually overlook. The seemingly insignificant. Notice these things.

The recent local elections were the first I’ve covered in this state, and some of the results give glimmers of hope. There is much that is wonderful about Alabama, but there is also corruption and poor governance that needs to be addressed at all levels.

As has been detailed countless times the past four to five years we are in the greatest die-off in our country's history since the rollout of the COVID shots. The reckoning is overdue.

Perhaps this is the lesson golf was trying to teach me all along: that love, true love, means stepping back far enough to let people become themselves.

Rural communities typically experience an exodus of the young seeking greater opportunities after high school. But one segment of the population looks upon country towns and sees an opportunity waiting to be taken advantage of: LGBTQ+ activists.
