According to recent data from the U.S. Department of Labor, Alabama overpaid unemployment compensation benefit recipients by more than $164 million in 2020 and 2021.
I attended Turning Point USA’s Student Action Summit this past weekend in Tampa. It was delightful to see so many young conservative patriots (over 5,000) in attendance - willing to stand up for our God-given freedoms and rights - the values our founders established for our country, which are secured by the U.S. Constitution.
Schools today chase the latest ideology. And because we can't see the damage or we choose to ignore it, the idea seems to be, what's the harm in letting a kid express themselves? Who cares if they dress up as a furry?
Under current Alabama law, judges have limited authority to deny bail to violent offenders unless the suspect is charged with a capital offense or poses a flight risk. That means that dangerous criminals are being released back onto the streets, even when its likely they will commit more violent crimes as soon as they make bail.
Listen to 1819 News Editor-in-Chief Ray Melick on The Jeff Poor Show as they discuss teacher salaries versus disappointing student testing results.
The Alabama Department of Public Health and their unelected leader, Scott Harris, are back to pushing masks as a COVID mitigation strategy.
It gives one pause to witness so many free, intelligent, and otherwise lucid people excrete blivits of bad faith in their understanding of and actions in relation to THE LAW.
Think about it. In recent days President Biden himself has said that the pain at the pump right now is a “necessary part of the transition.” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said that it is well known that the current electrical grid infrastructure cannot sustain the push to reach Biden’s electric vehicle goals of 50% total usage by 2030.
Stephanie, I agree with your article 100%. When we believe that the Church is a place for worship, evangelism, and missions instead of politics and division and condemning to hell, then the boldest way and the only way the church can speak is through evangelism and missions, salt and light in government education and in the marketplace of institutions. Jesus went to the Samaritan woman at the well. The politicians and church leaders nailed Him on the cross for doing that.
The Illinois legislature, which is dominated by Democrats, voted almost unanimously in favor of suspending the 1% sales tax on groceries in April. Part of a package deemed the “Family Relief Plan,” Illinois’ budget for this year also includes a pause on increasing the state’s gas tax, tax rebate checks of $50-$100 per person, $520 million in property tax credits for homeowners, and an expanded sales tax holiday for school supplies and clothing.
I stop at a little seafood joint. The place is surrounded by marshland grass, a wide-open sky, scattered live oaks, and roughly 8 million Chrysler Pacifica minivans. The place looks like a tourist trap on crack. But it’s getting late, so I go inside and order a beer.
Modern people seem to be driven by their feelings and no doubt Hollywood has had something to do with that, particularly when it comes to our feelings and romantic love. It is as if we can abdicate our responsibilities in marriage if we lose our feelings toward our spouse.
When Birmingham won its bid to host the 2021 World Games in 2015, it was expected to be a major boom for the area. At the time, organizers projected that the economic impact would be $256.5 million against a projected cost of $75 million. But now that the World Games have come and gone, was it worth the price? Did expectations live up to reality?
All in all, the legislature did the abortion issue right and we are seeing the fruit of their labor today. The now-effective Human Life Protection Act is true to pro-life principles, will keep women from prosecution, and represents Alabama’s conservative values well. It is a morally just law of which our state ought to be proud. It was not a haphazard political stunt but a good and thoughtful policy that considered what implementation might look like if the ban were ever allowed to go into effect.
While the Political Left has been reeling from defeats lately - from the Supreme Court overruling Roe to parents fighting back against woke indoctrination of their kids- the Left has been making progress on one issue: passing a federal law that will further break down marriage.
Listen to 1819 News Editor-in-Chief Ray Melick on News & Views with Joey Clark as they discuss climate change/global warming/global cooling, Biden gaffes, Parker Griffith's assessment of the Alabama Democratic Party, and Greenetrack's $76 million tax assessment.
Every now and then, I am asked this question regarding the Frederick Douglass Republican (FDR) Engagement Strategy. Based on real-world experiences, the FDR Engagement Strategy has been test-marketed thoroughly with mind-blowing positive results. There are hundreds, if not thousands of success stories and testimonials I could share with you. However, for the sake of brevity, here are a couple of success stories and a testimonial:
Birmingham hosted the World Games this summer on the heels of the revived United States Football League’s inaugural season. The World Games had a projected quarter billion-dollar impact and brought thousands to Birmingham. Can sports drive prosperity for Birmingham and Alabama?
I asked about the teachers. She said they don't, or won't, say anything to the furries. A furry? Meaning, a kid who identifies as an animal and can dress like it, too? Yes. A furry. At a school near you.
Listen to 1819 News Editor-in-Chief Ray Melick on The Jeff Poor Show as they discuss SEC Media Days, political races with their fundraising and potential seniority factors, and medical marijuana and its lack of transparency in the process.
As I drive through my boyhood neighborhood to visit my grandfather, I can’t help but notice the many American flags twisting in the wind here in the Heart of Dixie. Some of the flags truly exemplify the name “Old Glory,” worn down and weathered by time and the elements. Others, flags so new you can still see their packing creases, burst ever so bright and bold — glaring red, white, and blue in the Alabama sun.
"The old canard says, ‘You can’t legislate morality.’ The truth is you can’t avoid legislating morality. Every law says, ‘It’s not okay to do this thing’ or ‘You must do this thing.’ Every law legislates morality. Morality will be legislated. The only question is, whose morality?” (God, Caesar, and Idols, by Rick D. Boyer)
Recently I saw a picture on social media that caught my attention. It was one of thousands that were in my feed that day, but it stuck with me more than most. It was just a picture of a normal looking guy holding up a sign. I’ll get back to the reasons why that picture was such a draw in a minute.
Starting this upcoming school year, families in Tennessee will be able to enroll in a school choice program that allows eligible students to use taxpayer dollars to attend private schools. On Wednesday, a Tennessee court lifted its injunction against the Education Savings Account program, which was originally signed into law in 2019. As a result, Governor Bill Lee announced that the program would be active starting this fall.
I am discovering that many men suffer silently from shame. Shame has so much to do with the way you see yourself. Your sense of value and worth as a person. Shame generally is a result of perceived failure — whether it be business failure, financial failure, athletic failure, academic failure, relational failure or moral failure.
Jack was laid to rest today at 12 p.m. sharp. It was a small service in the Peterson’s backyard. There were folding chairs. Jack’s pinewood box was decorated with white flowers and his favorite chew toys.
